SSAIB backs latest 100 in 100 security apprenticeships drive.

SSAIB is supporting the recently launched 100 in 100 campaign 2013, the third annual initiative to create new apprenticeships in the UK security sector. SSAIB has backed the campaign since its launch in 2011 by Skills for Security, CSL DualCom and United Business Media.

The latest bid to place 100 apprentices in 100 days was officially launched at this year’s IFSEC and takes place in the timeframe leading up to UBM’s Security Excellence Awards ceremony on 23rd October.

In its first 18 months, the 100 in 100 scheme placed over 550 apprentices into careers within the security industry, including installers, engineers, technicians, customer service, locksmith, administration and reception roles.

Government funding for training costs is available, together with potential e-learning options for those without a nearby college. Administration procedures are eased with Skills for Security handling the paperwork, from initial sign-up through to appointing a college or training provider. The organisation also provides qualified assessors to guide/monitor progress and will draw down government funding for companies – 100% government funding is available for apprentices aged 16-18 and 50% for 19-24 year-olds. Government loans are also available for apprentices aged 25 and above.

So far this year, 88 firms have registered as recruiting one or more apprentices, with the total number of apprentices recruited by these companies currently standing at 121 – a remarkable 50% more than at the same stage in 2012.

Research by the National Apprenticeship Service in 2010 revealed that 77% of employers canvassed believe apprenticeships make them more competitive. Over 80% believe apprenticeships reduce their staff turnover, while over 80% of consumers favour using those companies that take on new apprentices.

“SSAIB’s continuing support for the important ‘100 in 100’ initiative is something we’re proud to be providing as part of our remit to offer guidance and encouragement to both certificated firms and those considering certification,” comments Chief Executive Geoff Tate. “Apprenticeship training is a very valuable way to invest in the future of the security sector.”
