As part of the SSAIB-backed Trailblazer initiative, a booklet on the new Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Technicians Apprenticeship has been unveiled.
The Apprentices for Fire and Security information pack explains the new apprenticeship standard – launched in February 2017 with support from SSAIB, the FSA, the BSIA, the FIA, the NSI and other key industry stakeholders – in addition to how firms of all sizes can sign up for the scheme.
The majority of SSAIB-registered firms will be able to receive 100% funding for the new level 3 apprenticeship from the government, with the funding thresholds being set at 90% for firms with a payroll of less than £3million and the full amount of up to £18,000 available for firms with less than 50 employees.
As part of the learning process, employers are able to choose their own training provider from the national network or an End Point Assessment (EPA) organisation can be selected instead. Training providers and colleges also have access to the scheme, so firms are advised to post their apprenticeship vacancies at www.a4fs.org.
Firms can also choose from four different pathways that suit both themselves and their apprentice(s) – as core modules are included alongside additional relevant units to help create high quality engineers across security, fire, fire and emergency lighting and fire and security.
Four-fifths of the training during the 36-month apprenticeship will come through experience and mentoring acquired ‘on the job’, while the other 20% will be knowledge-based. The final part of the programme is an End Point Assessment (EPA), which is a two-day test that can be taken at any point within the last 12 weeks of the apprenticeship.
A hard copy of the information booklet will be sent out to all of our registered firms through the post, but an online version is available here.
